New Hampshire Economy Maintains Position as No. 1 on US Healthiest Economies List

The Ohio Alliance for Innovation in Population Health made a decade-long analysis of economic distress where New Hampshire’s economy was deemed the healthiest out of all 50 US states. Compared to the last study done, New Hampshire’s economy improved. New Hampshire’s economic distress index score was valuated at 70.8 at the start of the survey, in 2009, and has improved to 68.8 in 2019, where the lower number means a healthier economy. It remained the top-ranked economy during the lifespan of that research.

The Appalachian Regional Commission determines economic distress by analyzing unemployment rate, per capita market income, and poverty rate averaged over three years and compared to national averages.

Vermont also scored well in the evaluation, ranking ninth in healthiest economies. Also in the top 10 were North Dakota (2), Hawaii (3), Nebraska (4), Minnesota (5), Massachusetts (6), Maryland (7), Connecticut (8), and Wyoming (10). Vermont improved its ranking to 9th from 12th.

Meanwhile, Mississippi was the most economically distressed state, according to the study.
