The family owned resort has hosted annual pond hockey tournaments for 11 years running. “Pond Hockey is one of the most popular sports we have,” explains Sarah Howe, the business development director for the resort. “Literally, hundreds of people participate in our other two existing tournaments, with a wait list of teams wanting to join.  We thought, why not create a new tournament that gives back to the community and gives our teams the opportunity to slap cancer while they slap the puck!”

Players will enjoy a weekend of pond hockey competition while supporting a great cause. Play will be divided into three divisions: League (more competitive), Pond (recreational), and 50+ (people born Feb. 8, 1970 or earlier).  Play will take place all day on Saturday capped by a tournament dinner and entertainment to support NCCC that night. Play continues on Sunday morning followed by the championship game and an awards ceremony in the afternoon. The weekend will come to a close around 4pm on Sunday.

Volunteers and spectators are welcome. The tournament hopes to have as many as 50 teams playing throughout the weekend, in this, its first year. Volunteers are needed as scorekeepers/referees (no experience necessary, training provided). All volunteers will be provided a warm meal while working, as well as disposable glove and boot warmers and grippers for shoes while out on the ice.

Philanthropic dollars raised from Put Cancer on Ice support world-class research, state-of-the-art equipment, critical education programs, and innovative clinical trials that make a difference in the treatment of cancer patients all over the world. Funds from this event also go toward important patient and family supportive services that help ease the journey of cancer patients and their families, such as support groups, massage therapy, art and writing programs, transportation and grocery assistance, resource libraries and much, much more.
