Youssra El Hawary
“Perfect, easy magic. I’m totally hooked on music by this…singer/songwriter from Egypt.” (NPR’s All Songs Considered) Youssra El Hawary became a slyly defiant sensation in the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution based on the strength of her socially-aware, personal and original music. Now a fixture of Egypt’s independent music scene, El Hawary and her five-piece band playfully meld the sounds of Cairo’s underground with French chanson, indie rock and jazz. This presentation of Youssra El Hawary is part of Center Stage, a public diplomacy initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts in cooperation with the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations, with support from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. General management is provided by Lisa Booth Management, Inc.
