With more than 3 million visitors each year, Yellowstone is a very popular tourist destination. Most of these visits happen between the months of May and September, but people do come to the park year-round. Here are some hints for the easiest ways to get there by air and suggestions for where to stay.

Getting There: Of the five approaches into Yellowstone, the three most efficient and popular ways to get there from New England are:

1. Fly to Jackson, Wyoming, then drive north through Grand Teton National Park, which abuts Yellowstone. See both parks in one trip.

2. Fly to Bozeman, Montana, then drive south on Highway 191, the “geyser route” to Old Faithful.

3. Fly to Billings, Montana, then drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway (Highway 212) into Yellowstone at Cooke City. Charles Kuralt called the Beartooth Highway “America’s most scenic road.”

Where to Stay: Many visitors RV camp or tent camp at one of Yellowstone’s five campgrounds. There are also nine historic lodges and cabin clusters in the park, including the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, Lake Lodge by Yellowstone Lake, and Old Faithful Inn. www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com

For hotels and restaurants just outside Yellowstone, consider staying in Gardiner, Montana, just beyond the landmark Roosevelt Arch at the northwestern entrance to the park.
