Sep 22, 2016 05:46PM ● By Melanie HeisingerAnyone with a puppy, especially first-time dog owners, will appreciate this valuable list compiled by Penny Murano, owner of the pet store Unleashed in New London, New Hampshire. Take this pro’s advice and you’ll enjoy having a happy, healthy, loyal companion for many years to come.
1. Crate.
We recommend a VariKennel (plastic) over a metal crate. A VariKennel allows the puppy to have less stimulation inside the crate and feels more like a "cave.”
2. Bed or crate mat.
Buy one that can fit in your crate.
3. Collar and leash sized appropriately for the dog.
Purchase one that can adjust size as the puppy grows.
4. Water and food bowls.
We recommend ceramic or stainless steel for easy cleaning.
5. High quality food.
You can do a puppy formula or an all-life stages grain-free food.
6. Chews:
Bully sticks, Nylabones, Marrow bones, Earth Animal no-hide chews. We do not recommend rawhide until puppy is over 6 months of age.
7. Toys.
You should have a selection of both soft plush and rubber toys.
8. Treats.
Puppies love treats, so have a variety of soft training treats and hard treats for when they are crated.
9. Poop bags or pooper scooper.
This tip goes without saying!10. Identification tag.
Be sure to put your cell phone on the tag, as you won't be sitting at home if your puppy is lost.
