This Sunday, May 21, there will be a Family Day event sponsored by the Hood Museum of Art of Art. Families can explore the sculptures located around Dartmouth, and then have an opportunity to build one of their own.

Neely McNulty, Acting Head of Education and Images and ArtStart Instructor at the Hood Museum, answers questions about the event:

Q: Is this the first time you’ve done this Family Day event?

A: Typically, we hold Family Day events twice a year. This is our first Family Day, however, that focuses entirely on campus sculpture. It runs on Sunday from 1-4pm.

Q: What ages should be able to participate in the event?

A: Family Days are free drop-in events designed to invite families to explore and make art together. Children of all ages with their adult companions are welcome, though the activities are best suited for children ages six and up.

Q: What are some of the sculptures participants will see on the tour?

A: Family Day begins at the Hopkins Center Plaza where participants will receive our Public Art at Dartmouth walking-tour map with prompts that encourage active engagement with the sculptures that families select from the map. In addition, families will be encouraged to use their phone’s camera to record a visual diary of their experience.

Q: What do you think is the highlight of the event?

A: Making sculpture is definitely a highlight of the day. After looking at sculptures across campus, participants will return to a satellite studio space in the Hop to make a sculpture. Not only can everyone in the family make one, but everyone can make more than one sculpture to take home.
