Fireworks are the highlight of most 4th of July celebrations. If you plan on shooting off your own fireworks rather than going to a larger public display, there are a few things to keep in mind so you are both safe and legal.

In Vermont, the only fireworks allowed are sparklers and other novelty smoke devices. All other personal fireworks are illegal.

In New Hampshire, more fireworks can be purchased by individuals. Along with sparklers and novelty smoke devices, you can buy cylindrical fountains, cone fountains, wheels, ground spinners, aerial spinners, Roman candles, mines/cakes/shells, reloadable mortars, parachutes, and firecrackers. You are only allowed to set off your fireworks on property that you own or with written permission from the landowner.

Fireworks are unpredictable and can cause serious injuries if they are not handled carefully. The New Hampshire Department of Safety offers these fireworks safety tips:

1. Follow your local and state laws regarding the display and possession of fireworks. Be sure to read and follow all directions, caution labels, and warning labels on each individual firework device.
2. Never allow children to handle, play with, or light any type of fireworks.
3. Do not consume alcohol while handling fireworks.
4. Always display fireworks in a clear, open area free of overhead objects. Always provide for a safe distance between buildings and any viewing audience.
5. Always light fireworks on a hard, flat, and level surface to ensure the stability of the device.
6. Never extend any part of your body over the top of any device.
7. Always ignite one device at a time.
8. Never attempt to re-ignite, alter, or fix any fireworks device that has failed to fire.
9. Always have a form of fire suppression nearby, such as a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water.
10. Be cautious about igniting aerial devices during high wind conditions.
11. Never aim, point, throw, or shoot fireworks at another person.
12. Always store fireworks in a cool, dry place and dispose of them properly.

When your fireworks show is finished, stay away from any device that didn’t discharge for at least 10 minutes, then fill with or submerge it in water. Also, be sure to clean up all the debris. Finally, store any unused fireworks securely and away from children.
