New Book Coming Soon from Former Hanover Resident Author-Illustrator Jason Chin
Mar 30, 2018 05:46PM ● By Linda DitchAuthor-illustrator Jason Chin has a new book being released this May. Pie is for Sharing, written by Stephanie Parsley Ledyard, is about a group of friends learning about what can be shared on a summer’s day, including pie.
A Lyme native and 1997 graduate of Hanover High School, Jason studied illustration at Syracuse University. His co-workers at a New York City children’s bookstore helped him make the connection with his current publisher, Roaring Book Press, a division of Macmillan Publishers.
Jason’s most recent book, Grand Canyon (Roaring Book Press/Macmillan, Winter 2017), which he wrote and illustrated, is the story of a father and daughter making their way through this famous national park. It has received numerous awards, including a 2018 Caldecott Medal Honor, 2018 Sibert Medal Honor, 2018 NCTE Orbis Pictus Award, and Booklist Editors Choice Top of the List 2017.
A Publishers Weekly starred review said of the book, “Chin packs the geologic history of the Grand Canyon into a stunningly illustrated story of a magical father-daughter hike. The duo’s daylong trek out of the magnificent landform becomes a journey through time, as discoveries along the trail transport the girl to various eras in the canyon’s creation.”
In Pie is for Sharing, as in many of his other books, Jason likes to feature diversity in the characters he draws. This particular book features his own children and their diverse mixture of friends. He said in a recent interview in the Valley News, “I set it on the Fourth of July because the book is about sharing, and sharing is an American value—or should be an American value—that I want to promote.”
