Did you know that eating spicy foods will keep you cooler in the summer? It’s true! The heat makes you sweat, which helps your body cool off. This is why people who live in hot climates love spicy dishes, but Upper Valley dwellers can also kick up the heat, thanks to the Angry Goat Pepper Co.
Roberta and Jason Parker named their company after an ornery goat they had on their farm. The couple sold chickens and eggs at a farmers’ market, then added goat meat to gain attention. While trying to think of other products to sell, they remembered the tasty and spicy pepper jellies they had enjoyed on their Bermuda honeymoon. Jason gathered up the plethora of hot peppers he’d grown in the garden and made pepper jam.
It was a hit. So much so that the couple expanded their jam selection and started selling their wares through local stores and on their website. They also expanded into hot sauces and spice powders. In 2016, they opened a storefront on South Main Street in White River Junction. There, visitors can taste some of their offerings.
AGP Co. sells many, many hot jams and sauces. Some of their best sellers include:
- Red Armadillo Hot Sauce: This taco-style sauce is smoky and sweet with its combo of New Mexican red chilies and Vermont maple syrup.
- Pink Elephant Hot Sauce: The fruitiness of cranberries, the warmth of ginger, and the heat of ghost peppers make this hot sauce great for pork, poultry, or eggs.
- Purple Hippo Hot Sauce: Combine prickly pear cactus juice with habanero and scorpion peppers, and you get an award-wining sauce, according to the World Hot Sauce Awards, Chili Pepper magazine, and the Scovie Awards.
- Mango Pepper Jam: Just slightly hot, this jam tastes great on cream cheese with crackers, on fish or chicken, and even over ice cream!
- Raspberry-Maple Habanero Pepper Jam: This is a hot one, combining raspberries and Vermont maple syrup with habaneros.
- Orange-Pineapple Habanero Pepper Jam: This one offers the citrus flavors of oranges and pineapples with a savory pepper blend. A great glaze for fish!
- Gates to Hell Pepper Jam: A combination of red cherries with lime juice, tequila, and some of the world’s hottest peppers—habanero, ghost, and scorpion peppers. The jam is extremely hot, so use with caution.
Along with selling hot products at the store and online, AGP Co. will also travel to a number of events this summer in the Northeast as well as in Oregon, Texas, and Illinois. To see the complete schedule, go to their website, www.angrygoatpepperco.com.
