For some, the recent removal of the Polka Dot sign outside the old diner location on South Main Street in White River Junction marked a sad passage. However, take heart, food lovers. The new sign for Phnom Penh Sandwich Station is up— a signal that the Cambodian take-out restaurant’s second location is closer to opening. The word on social media is that the date is set for sometime this fall.

The old sign will be displayed in the new restaurant. “It was a mad scramble yesterday afternoon as folks tried to make off with an iconic piece of WRJ history,” writes Execusuite managing agent Tim Sidore. “Folks were concerned the Polka Dot signs would be thrown away. But our sign creator, Tim Shay, successfully liberated them. They are safe and sound at an undisclosed location for the time being, before they go back up inside the new restaurant!”

In May, developer Mike Davidson of Execusuite announced the signing of Phnom Penh Sandwich Station as the new tenant for the building. Lay Yi and Sarin Tin own and run the Phnom Penh in Lebanon, which they opened last year after selling their Cambodian-style sandwiches first at the Hanover Farmers’ Market and then from a food truck.

Phnom Penh’s mission is to provide authentic, fresh Cambodian-style food to the Upper Valley. The restaurant’s website (http://www.phnompenhsandwiches.com) says their inspiration came from seeing families and friends hanging out on the Lebanon Green. It reminded them of their childhood in Cambodia, where families used picnics to bring everyone closer together. They wanted to help the UV community have that same experience.

Hopefully, that means there will be appetizers such as their fried dumplings, meat sticks, and spring and summer rolls—all just $3! And, of course, they must have the Phnom Penh Sandwich— a fresh-baked roll filled with cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots, chili mayo, and meat or other protein of your choice (the coconut jumbo shrimp and the grilled tofu with spice soy–sesame sauce are favorites.)
