The educational programs at Northern Stage seek to engage local students of all ages in exploring the world of theater. Local school-age children who are interested in theater and performance can take advantage of any of several training programs offered by Northern Stage.

BOOT CAMP

Northern Stage is thrilled to introduce Boot Camp, a program designed to nurture young theater artists by providing in-depth training and mentorship for high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates who want to pursue a career in the arts.

SUMMER CAMPS

Every June, Northern Stage offers week-long summer camps. All classes focus on team work, self-confidence, and acting techniques.

SUMMER MUSICAL THEATER INTENSIVE

Each summer, Northern Stage offers the Summer Musical Theater Intensive and Technical Apprentice Program. These programs are designed to extend the professionalism of our main stage to young actors, ages 12-18, and young technicians, ages 14-18.

TECHNICAL APPRENTICE PROGRAM

Northern Stage believes the artistry that happens behind the scenes is just as important as the artistry that happens on the stage. We pride ourselves in having a fully professional and exceptionally gifted production staff, from our technical director, to our scenic artists, to our props master. This program is designed to train and inspire technical theater artists of the future. The summer Technical Apprentice Program runs in conjunction with the Summer Musical Theater Intensive. TAP students will work on this production in the shops and run crew for performances.

YOUTH ENSEMBLE STUDIO (YES)

YES members will participate in group nights at the theater with post show discussions and monthly master classes with cast members and creative teams of the main stage productions. YES will also rehearse and perform three productions throughout the course of the academic school year, culminating in a fully-produced musical on the main stage.

YES, Jr.

YES, Jr. is designed for kids with a passion for theater in grades 4-6. From January-March the YES, Jr. company will see three shows at Northern Stage with a master class beforehand and talkbacks afterwards. Over February vacation week they will rehearse and perform a 30-minute play that focuses on acting technique.

BRIDGEUP: THEATER IN THE SCHOOLS

The mission of BridgeUP: Theater in the Schools is to increase theater access and learning resources for 4-6 grade students throughout Vermont and New Hampshire through programs that bring artists into the classroom, support the curricular needs of underserved schools, and introduce young people to theater through low‐cost access to professional productions. Northern Stage partners with area elementary and middle schools to offer a five-week residency program of performative experiential learning that supports the curriculum of the classroom. We offer two programs — one focused on Shakespeare and one on Musical Theater (emphasis on literature-based musicals such as Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach).
