5 Online Art Classes for Adults Hosted by AVA Art Gallery

Whether you have been making art for years or haven’t drawn since you were a kid with a crayon, taking an art class can be a great way to ignite your creative expression, learn, and have fun!

At AVA Gallery and Art Center, the goal is to cultivate “an openness of space and mind to inspire, nurture, and showcase the artistic spirit.” Creative expression is a way we play and a way we can get to know ourselves and each other more fully!

AVA Art Gallery provides a variety of online art classes for the community. You can see their website for more information about pricing and a full list of courses you can take but here are 5 that caught our eye.

One-sheet Books Wed, Sept 9 (6-8 pm)

This is a two-hour bookmaking workshop that meets only once on Sept 9th. It will teach you how to make a selection of simple folded “books” you can use for self-publishing ventures, comics, or cards, and can be great for computer artists as well traditional handmade material artists. Stephanie Wolff will teach this class, and it will meet online using Zoom.


The Active Observer – Basic Drawing Wed, Sept 9-Oct 14 (10 am-12 pm)

This is an excellent class for beginners who are just starting out and for those who want to refresh their basic drawing skills and build a solid drawing foundation. This is a two-hour class that meets on Zoom every Wednesday, starting September 9th through October 14th. You will be working with charcoal and pencil on paper and will be learning how to create, perspective, shadow, form, contour, and gesture. Dan Gottsegen will teach this class.


Painting the Vibrant Fall Colors in Watercolor Thu & Fri, Oct 1-2  (1 pm-3:30 pm)

Take a two-day workshop and learn how to capture the vivid fall colors and New England landscape with watercolor painting techniques taught by Robert O'Brien. This class is open to folks of all abilities through prior experience with watercolors will be helpful. This class will be held on Zoom. The instructor will begin the workshop with a demonstration to show that by using a layering process, you can accentuate the autumn colors. He will also instruct on how to create light and shadow to make your painting come to life.

Creative & Professional Practice Wed, Oct 7-28 (6 pm-8 pm)

For folks who want to invest more in their artistic life and advance professionally and creatively, this workshop will help you create a sustainable life doing what you love.  This class covers the logistics that go into managing your time and finances as well as how to create a website, write grant proposals, document your art, and find locations to exhibit it. This class will go in-depth to help you with everything from your artist’s statement and resume to examining your studio practice. The instructor, Kim Bernard, will be able to provide critical feedback on your work and your professional development to guide you in your artistic career. Find your artistic community and join this two-hour class every Wednesday on Zoom starting October 7th through the 28th. 

Painting with Encaustic: Layers, Richness and Personal Vision Thurs, Oct 8-29 (1 pm-2:30 pm) (Last class 1 pm-2 pm)

If you wish to expand and develop your personal style and vision as an artist, this class is for you! This is an intermediate to the advanced encaustic workshop that will teach students techniques to help them create more dynamic works of art. The class will focus on technical methods of fusing, of mark-making, and color application and will also use pastels, pigment sticks, collage, and graphite. Lisa Pressman will be the instructor, and she will meet with her students on Zoom every Thursday, beginning October 8th through the 29th. This is an excellent opportunity to explore your artistic point of view and develop your encaustic skillset.
