Perfect Picnic Locations For This Spring + Summer In The Upper Valley
May 26, 2022 01:08PM ● By Rose TeramiSpring is officially here, and it’s the perfect time to start scoping out some good picnicking spots for the season! The Upper Valley features several great locations where you can spread out a blanket, enjoy some snacks, and take in the fresh New England air.
Colburn Park (the Lebanon Green)
Colburn Park in downtown Lebanon (North Park St. Lebanon, NH 03766) is the perfect location for a peaceful picnic in the shade. The park has plenty of grassy space, trees, water fountains, a gazebo, and a children’s playground. Surrounding the green are a variety of businesses and services—restaurants, the Lebanon Public Library, Lucky’s Coffee Garage, and more—in case you want to supplement your picnic with some local food, drinks, or a good book. Colburn Park is open every day from 8 am – 10 pm.
The Dartmouth Green
Located in Hanover and a part of Dartmouth college’s campus, the Dartmouth Green is a well-maintained outdoor recreation space complete with walking paths, park benches, and grass fit for a picnic. The green can be a busy spot in the summer--especially while college students are still in town—but you’ll find plenty of open space to stake out a spot and enjoy the sun (or shade) this summer.
“The Green” in Woodstock
In downtown Woodstock, the green, across from the Woodstock Town Hall Theatre, is a nice spot to enjoy a picnic after some window shopping in town or maybe after a daytime visit to Billings Farm. From June to October, “Market on the Green” takes place on the green in Woodstock every Wednesday from 3-6 pm and is a good opportunity to grab some food from local vendors for a picnic at a table or on the grass!
Silver Lake
Silver Lake State Park in Barnard is a good option if you’re looking to combine your picnic with a day by the water, especially if you are bringing along kids that need to be entertained! The park opens on May 27 and is accessible to the public daily from 10 am to official sunset time. The park grounds are equipped with picnic tables, grassy areas, a beach area, and even a picnic pavilion with grills and picnic tables that can be rented ($100 and seats up to 100 people). Day entry to the park costs $4 for an adult, $2 for a child, and is free for children 0-3 years old. Seasons passes can also be purchased online.
Pinnacle Hill
In Lyme, the hill at the top of the 2.9-mile Pinnacle Loop hike is a perfect spot for a rewarding picnic after you make your way there. The hill can be windy, so keep an eye on the weather and wear appropriate hiking clothing. During your picnic, you will enjoy views across the Connecticut River and of the White Mountains. To reach the trailhead, navigate to Pinnacle Road Lyme, NH 03768.
Kilowatt Park
Kilowatt Park in Wilder is a small but private boat launch and picnic area with park benches, picnic tables, trail and fishing access, and open grassy areas. Though there isn’t much shade, there are plenty of places to picnic, and the River is easily accessible to wade or swim in on a hot day! The park is located at 61 Passumpsic Ave. Wilder, VT 05001.
