Organizations That Celebrate and Help Veterans All Year

Nov 10, 2024 02:47PM ● By Erin Frisch

Veterans Day is on Monday, which means that there will be several parades and parties across the county honoring our veterans. Even though there is one day a year that celebrates our veterans, there are several organizations that do so year-round.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

Since 1899, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or VFW for short, has been the leading veterans service organization in the country.

“No matter which conflict called you to service, we invite you to join us. Stand strong with the more than 1.4 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary as together, we continue to fight for all that’s good FOR VETERANS,” the website said.

To join, you must have served honorably in the United States military AND served in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters. More detailed information on eligibility can be found here. There is also an auxiliary option for all family members of those who qualify.

American Legion

The American Legion is a veterans service organization that is open to all honorably discharged and current members of the military. It was founded as an Act of Congress after WWI in 1919.

“...The American Legion fiercely advocates for the unique needs of every generation of veterans, service members, and their families who pledge to protect our nation. Today, we are committed to destigmatizing mental health support, offering peer-to-peer resources, and empowering everyone to Be The One in the fight to end veteran suicide,” the website said.

To be eligible to join, you must have served at least one day of active military duty since December 7, 1941 and have been honorably discharged or still serving active military duty honorably. There are also options for family members to join as well with the Sons of the American Legion and the Auxilary.
